What Is the 25th Word?

BIP39 allows you to add an optional passphrase (sometimes called the "25th word") to your 24-word seed phrase. This creates an entirely different set of wallet addresses.

With just the 24 words: Wallet A (empty or decoy funds). With the 24 words + passphrase: Wallet B (your real holdings).

It's brilliant security. It provides plausible deniability. If someone steals your seed phrase, they find an empty wallet and assume you have nothing.

But there's a fatal flaw in the estate plan.

The Inheritance Trap

Your heir finds your metal seed plate in the safe. They carefully enter all 24 words into a new hardware wallet. They see... nothing. Or maybe $50 you left as a decoy.

They assume the crypto is gone. Lost. Hacked. They mourn the loss and move on.

Meanwhile, millions sit on the blockchain, mathematically accessible, but practically invisible — because your heir doesn't know there's a 25th word, let alone what it is.

This isn't theoretical. It's happening right now across thousands of wallets whose owners died, got dementia, or had strokes. The crypto exists. The knowledge to access it doesn't.

Delivering the 25th Word Safely

You need to deliver the 25th word separately from the seed phrase, and automatically upon your incapacitation.

The ZeroLatch Strategy:

1. Your 24-word seed phrase stays on metal in a physical safe.
2. Your 25th word (passphrase) is stored in an encrypted ZeroLatch vault.
3. Your vault's dead man's switch is set to deliver the passphrase to your heir if you don't check in.
