The Press Freedom Imperative

Journalists and sources can face device seizure, account compromise, legal demands, harassment and physical danger. No tool removes those risks, and a delayed-release system can create new ones if it exposes a source, releases unverified material or alerts an adversary.

A continuity plan should begin with editorial policy, legal review, source consent and a threat model. The goal may be preservation for an editor—not automatic public release. The sender should document who may receive material, how authenticity is checked and what must never be disclosed.

Implementing a Journalist Safety Protocol

For journalists handling sensitive information, a dead man's switch should be part of a broader security protocol:

1. Document Classification Categorize your documents by sensitivity level. Not everything needs a dead man's switch — save it for material that could be suppressed or destroyed.

2. Encryption and minimisation Keep only the material required for the handover. ZeroLatch encrypts files in the browser, but key custody differs between Simple assisted recovery and Private self-custody.

3. Recipient Selection Choose an editor, lawyer or organisation authorised to receive the material. Each ZeroLatch delivery has one intended recipient; separate deliveries should have separately justified scope.

4. Check-In Intervals ZeroLatch intervals are 1, 7, 30, 60, 90 or 180 days, followed by a 0, 1, 7, 14, 21 or 30-day safety period. The lifecycle runs daily, so it remains unsuitable for conflict-zone welfare checks or rapid detention response.

5. Separate Password Channels Share the Private password or recovery phrase through a completely separate channel — in person, via encrypted messaging, or through a trusted intermediary. Never include the password in the same system as the files.

Identity and metadata considerations

ZeroLatch requires an authenticated email account. Account, recipient, billing and operational metadata may exist even when file contents are encrypted.

Assess whether merely revealing the sender-recipient relationship creates danger. Review device security, email compromise, browser history, payment records, analytics, access logs and the recipient's own security. Use specialist secure-drop and source-protection systems when anonymity or rapid response is required.

Private mode means ZeroLatch does not store the recovery code, but it does not eliminate metadata or legal obligations. Simple mode deliberately permits authorised recovery. Neither mode should be represented as immune from legal process.

Legal Considerations

The legal landscape around dead man's switches varies by jurisdiction. In most democratic countries, using a dead man's switch is perfectly legal — it's simply a conditional file-sharing arrangement.

However, journalists should be aware of: • Source protection laws in their jurisdiction • Official secrets legislation that might apply to certain documents • Data protection regulations (like GDPR) that apply to personal data about third parties in the documents • Anti-terrorism laws that could be broadly interpreted in some jurisdictions
