The Ecosystem Silo

Google's tool is excellent for Google things. It will share your Google Photos and Gmail archives.

But your digital life is not just Google. It's your Coinbase account. Your GoDaddy domains. Your password manager master key. Your private Discord server.

Google cannot unlock these. In fact, if your heirs try to use your Gmail to reset passwords for these other services, 2FA (SMS or app) often blocks them because they don't have your unlocked phone.

Inactivity is not authority

Google's feature decides when to notify contacts and which selected Google data to make available. It does not make the contact an executor, authorise a bank transfer or bypass a provider's deceased-user process.

For non-Google accounts, document the provider, owner, recovery route and applicable legal authority. Do not assume access to Gmail automatically permits access to everything reset through that mailbox; second factors, passkeys and provider reviews may still apply.

Use a layered plan

Keep Google Inactive Account Manager for eligible Google data. Use Apple Legacy Contact for eligible Apple data, password-manager recovery for maintained credentials, and appropriate estate documents for authority.

Google configuration review

Confirm the inactivity period, selected contacts, phone numbers, notification text and specific data products in the current Google settings. Tell the contact what the notice means without exposing unrelated secrets.

Review after changing a phone number, primary email, Workspace relationship or storage plan. Keep irreplaceable photos and records in an independent maintained archive rather than assuming one platform setting is a complete estate plan.
