Paper Wallets Burn: Designing Better Physical Crypto Backups
Paper can fail through fire, flood, theft and confusion. Compare durable media, independent locations, tamper evidence and tested recovery.
The Myth of the Indestructible Paper
Paper, metal and electronic backups each have failure modes. Fire, water, corrosion, theft and unclear labelling can affect whether an authorised person can use a backup. The useful question is which risks your particular arrangement addresses and which it leaves open.
Choose media appropriate to the location and follow the wallet's official backup procedure. Do not assume a durable material makes a backup complete: an additional passphrase, recovery shares or a different wallet configuration may still be needed. A successful rehearsal with a harmless test wallet gives more useful evidence than an absolute claim about any material.
The "Off-Site" Dilemma
A separate location can reduce dependence on one building, but creates its own access and custody questions. Decide who can reach it, how they are authorised and what happens if that person or location becomes unavailable.
A family member, professional custodian or secure storage service may fit different needs. Record the arrangement without publishing the secret or assuming access will be immediate. Balance loss and unauthorised-access risks instead of treating every extra copy as automatically good or bad.
Use independent, controlled copies
The answer is not automatically “more paper” or “put the whole seed online.” Choose durable media appropriate to fire, water and corrosion risk. Use locations with different failure modes, controlled access and an inventory that does not reveal the secret itself.
A ZeroLatch delivery can preserve the map, wallet context or one carefully selected factor after sustained absence. It still depends on account access, the provider, email and the selected recovery mode; it is not immune to loss or service failure.
Test recovery without exposing the real wallet
Create a low-value test wallet using the same backup method. Ask the future authorised person to identify the media, restore it into compatible software, verify the expected address and explain where an optional passphrase fits.
Record ambiguity, then destroy the test secrets safely. Review the real plan after moving home, changing custody, changing wallet software or replacing a recipient. A backup becomes trustworthy through rehearsal, not through the material it is written on.
