The Preparation Mindset

Preparing digital assets for heirs requires a shift in thinking. During your life, your digital assets are organized for your convenience — you know which services you use, where files are stored, and how to access everything. Your heirs know none of this.

The goal of preparation is to make your digital estate self-documenting. Anyone with the right authorization should be able to understand what assets exist, where they are, how to access them, and what to do with them — all without your help.

Creating a Digital Asset Map

A digital asset map is a comprehensive document that guides your heirs through your digital estate:

For Each Account/Asset, Document: • Service name and URL • Your username/email (not the password — that goes in your password manager) • Type of asset (financial, social, storage, subscription) • Approximate value (financial and sentimental) • What should happen to it (transfer, close, memorialize, archive) • Any special instructions

Organize By Priority:

  1. Urgent — Financial accounts, cryptocurrency, business-critical systems
  2. Important — Email, cloud storage, social media
  3. Low Priority — Entertainment subscriptions, gaming accounts, forum profiles

Store this document in your encrypted ZeroLatch vault so it's released automatically to your executor when needed.

Practical Steps Today

This Week: • Start a digital asset inventory spreadsheet • Set up a password manager if you don't have one • Create a ZeroLatch account and vault

This Month: • Complete your digital asset inventory • Configure Google Inactive Account Manager and Apple Digital Legacy • Choose and inform your digital executor • Upload your asset inventory and password manager export to your vault

Quarterly: • Review and update your inventory • Check that all credentials are current • Verify your dead man's switch is functioning (check in regularly) • Confirm your executor's contact information is current

The investment is minimal — a few hours of initial setup and 30 minutes quarterly. The return is peace of mind that your digital legacy is protected.
