What happens to your personal social media profiles when you pass away?

Social media platforms enforce varying rules upon death: Facebook and Instagram permit account memorialization through nominated legacy contacts, Google deletes accounts via Inactive Account Manager, and platforms lacking built-in tools freeze profiles permanently — making advance configuration essential for every platform you use.

Social media accounts are the most visible part of your digital legacy. They contain years of personal history, connections, photos, and sometimes substantial financial value (for influencers and content creators). Yet most people never configure what should happen to these accounts after death.

In 2025, an estimated 4.9 billion social media accounts belonged to deceased users. The majority of these accounts sit in digital limbo — inactive, unmonitored, and vulnerable to hacking. Some continue to appear in search results and friend suggestions, causing distress to grieving family members who see their deceased loved one's profile "active" in their feed.

Platform-specific death policies compared

Facebook • Memorialization: A legacy contact can memorialize the account, keeping it visible with "Remembering" label • Deletion: You can request permanent deletion in your settings before death • Legacy contact: Designate in Settings → General → Memorialization Settings • Access: Legacy contact can write a pinned post, change profile picture, and download photos — but cannot log in or read private messages

How to pre-configure your social media legacy

Step 1: Set up legacy contacts where available • Facebook/Instagram: Settings → Memorialization Settings → Choose Legacy Contact • Google/YouTube: Google Account → Data & Privacy → Inactive Account Manager → Choose trusted contact • Apple: Settings → Apple ID → Password & Security → Legacy Contact
