A future delivery needs a working service

A dead man’s switch can only process check-ins and notify a recipient while its operating dependencies work. The application, hosting, domain, email delivery, stored content and access system all matter. A provider can also close, change its offering or lose access to a required supplier. Encryption protects a different part of the problem: encrypted files do not automatically become available somewhere else if their host disappears.

Before relying on a service, ask what you can export today, whether the export includes file contents, what is needed to open it and whether another person can use it without that provider. A promise about long-term operation should come with an understandable exit route.

Keep files as well as an account record

In ZeroLatch, the Settings account export contains settings and metadata, not file contents. Private content included in that record remains encrypted. The JSON alone is not a self-contained recovery archive. Keep originals or download each file from its delivery, unlocking Private first. Open your saved files to confirm they are readable and protect those downloaded copies in your own secure storage.

Copy the handoff instructions into that backup too. Explain what each file is for and identify the appropriate contact. Avoid creating a bundle that gives one person every password and asset-recovery factor unless that scope is deliberate and appropriate.

Agree on access outside the provider

Tell the intended person where the independent backup can be found and how they are authorised to use it. Arrange access to any backup password separately. If the backup depends on a password manager, physical location or adviser, consider what happens when that dependency is unavailable too.

Practise opening a harmless example on another device. Record the date and the steps that needed clarification. A checkmark is your record of an exercise, not an automated guarantee of future access. Review after changes to the recipient, storage location, devices or contents.
