What the Emergency Kit is for

A 1Password Emergency Kit records account details needed for recovery and provides space for the account password. Stored carefully, it can protect against a forgotten sign-in address or a lost device. It is not, by itself, an inheritance workflow or legal appointment.

The inheritance plan still needs to answer who is authorised, how the person learns that a recovery path exists, where independently held authentication factors are, which accounts may be accessed and what should happen after access.

Avoid a single fragile copy

A printed kit in one house can be lost to fire, theft, disposal or family confusion. An unencrypted scan in ordinary cloud storage creates a different risk. Use two appropriately protected locations with different failure modes, tell the authorised person what the item is, and keep the account password separate where your threat model requires it.

For a business account, prefer family or team administration features and business-owned recovery methods over handing one person's universal credentials to another person.

Where conditional delivery can help

A ZeroLatch delivery can notify one intended recipient after a supported check-in interval and safety period, then provide selected encrypted instructions or files. That is useful when the recipient may not know when to retrieve a stored package.

It is not “fail-safe.” Email can bounce, an address can be wrong, the service can be unavailable and a Private password or recovery phrase can be lost. Simple access and Private access also have different key-recovery properties. Keep an independent fallback and test the actual recipient path with harmless content.

A complete password-manager inheritance test

Create a sample vault or harmless item. Ask the intended person to locate the Emergency Kit, identify the right account, obtain the correct second factor and explain the legal or organisational authority they would rely on. If using ZeroLatch, test the notification and file recovery separately.

Do not make the first test occur during bereavement or incapacity. Re-run it after a device, email address, password-manager plan, administrator or recovery policy changes.
