Understanding the Spectrum

Cryptocurrency storage exists on a security-convenience spectrum:

Hot Wallets (online, connected to internet): • Software wallets on your phone or computer (Metamask, Trust Wallet) • Exchange accounts (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance) • Web wallets

Cold Storage (offline, air-gapped): • Hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard) • Paper wallets (printed private keys) • Air-gapped computers • Metal seed phrase backups

Hot wallets are like your checking account — convenient for daily transactions. Cold storage is like a vault — secure for long-term holdings.

Security Trade-offs

Hot Wallet Risks: • Malware can steal private keys • Phishing attacks can trick you into signing malicious transactions • Exchange hacks can steal funds • Device theft provides immediate access

Hot Wallet Advantages: • Instant transactions • Easy DeFi interaction • No special hardware needed • Accessible from anywhere

Cold Storage Risks: • Physical loss or damage • Seed phrase exposure • Firmware vulnerabilities (rare but possible) • Complexity can lead to user error

Cold Storage Advantages: • Private keys never touch the internet • Immune to remote attacks • Physical possession required for transactions • Industry-standard for large holdings

Optimal Strategy

Choose exposure deliberately: Keep only the access you need in wallets used for routine transactions. Decide what belongs in a separate custody arrangement based on your usage, recovery needs and ability to operate it safely. There is no universal allocation ratio suitable for every owner.

Back up the recovery design: Whether hot or cold, document the recovery path. A ZeroLatch delivery may hold a scoped map, but the only usable seed or credential should not depend on one online service.

Layer Your Security: • Large, long-term holdings → Cold storage (hardware wallet in a safe) • Medium, active portfolio → Hot wallet with hardware wallet signing • Small, daily use → Mobile wallet with limited funds

Plan for Inheritance: Cold storage in a safe is useless to heirs who don't know the PIN or seed phrase. Ensure your dead man's switch includes access information for ALL your storage methods, not just online accounts.
