Hardware Wallets Are Not Immortal

Hardware wallets (Ledger, Trezor, Coldcard, etc.) are the gold standard for cryptocurrency self-custody. But they are physical devices that can be lost, stolen, damaged, or become obsolete.

Your hardware wallet is a convenient interface to your crypto, not the crypto itself. Your crypto exists on the blockchain, accessed through private keys. The seed phrase IS your backup — the hardware wallet is just a secure way to interact with those keys.

A backup strategy ensures you can recover from any hardware failure scenario while maintaining security.

Multi-Layer Backup Strategy

Layer 1: Seed Phrase (Primary Backup) Your seed phrase can regenerate all keys on any compatible wallet. Store it on stamped metal plates in a fireproof safe.

Layer 2: Second Hardware Wallet Import the same seed phrase on a second hardware wallet. Store it in a different physical location. If your primary device fails, the backup is immediately usable.

Layer 3: Dead Man's Switch Avoid combining the seed phrase, device PIN and all wallet instructions in one ZeroLatch delivery. Use it only for a scoped factor or map within a tested, independent recovery design.

Layer 4: Documented Procedures Write clear recovery instructions including: wallet brand and model, firmware version, account derivation paths (if non-standard), and step-by-step recovery procedure.

Regular Maintenance

• Firmware updates: Keep your hardware wallet firmware current to patch security vulnerabilities. Note: some updates require re-verification of your seed phrase. • Recovery testing: At least annually, verify your seed phrase works by restoring on a test device. • Battery check: Some hardware wallets have batteries (e.g., those with Bluetooth). Replace before they fail. • Derivation path documentation: If you use custom derivation paths, document them. Standard BIP44/49/84 paths are default, but non-standard paths mean your seed phrase alone isn't sufficient for recovery.
