What is the difference between a password vault and a dead man's switch for emergency access?

A password vault is designed for daily credential management with optional sharing or emergency-access features, whereas a dead man's switch monitors a configured check-in and may begin a delayed handover after inactivity. They are complementary tools, not proof of death or substitutes for legal authority.

Many people confuse password managers with dead man's switches, assuming that a password manager's "emergency access" feature is equivalent to a dedicated dead man's switch. While there's overlap in functionality, the two tools serve fundamentally different primary purposes and have different security models.

Limits to check: Password managers differ in file attachments, notes, sharing, emergency access and recovery. Check the actual provider and plan rather than assuming they only store passwords. Identify who initiates emergency access, which items become available and which separate factors are needed. Preserve a tested independent recovery arrangement.

Dead man's switches: strengths and limitations

A dead man's switch starts an information handover after missed check-ins and a waiting period. It does not detect death or guarantee that a recipient can act. Extra waiting time provides a chance to correct a missed check-in; it cannot prevent every accidental release.
