A longer-horizon switch can hold an itinerary archive, insurance and consular contacts, identity-document copies, account-recovery instructions and information about responsibilities at home. It helps after a sustained absence; it does not organise rescue.

Keep the urgent route, expected return time, medical facts and escalation threshold with the real-time safety contact. Do not hide the only copy behind a monthly timer.

Use both only when their jobs remain separate

Define the urgent trigger in minutes or hours and the continuity trigger in weeks or months. Tell the recipient which system is authoritative for each event. Test the safety tool in the terrain and connectivity conditions where it will be used, and test the continuity delivery with harmless files on another device.

What would a real emergency extension require?

An emergency product would need a separate safety architecture: mobile background execution, offline and satellite strategy, location consent, SOS and man-down handling, multi-channel escalation, human acknowledgement, false-alarm cancellation, immutable event records, on-call operations and jurisdiction-specific safety review.

That is not a small timer change. Treat it as a distinct product and safety case rather than silently adding short intervals to an estate-continuity system.

A practical decision checklist

Use a registered PLB or suitable satellite communicator for remote terrain where phones may not work. Leave route and return-time details with a responsible person.

Use a long-horizon dead man's switch when the missed event is measured in weeks or months and the goal is to hand over documents, account instructions or a continuity plan. The two products can complement each other, but neither should be described as a substitute for the other.
